Jug Handle Trail:
Location 14 & 15

This charred stump is evidence that this open area was created by fires (top).

Scotch broom (bottom), a member of the pea family and a native of Western Europe, is common in logged or burned areas and along roadsides in Northern California. Like gorse, it is an immigrant, but it is not as competitive for nutrients and sunlight. Eventually it will be replaced by conifers when the trees grow tall enough to shade it out.
