There are many species of manzanita - Spanish for "little apple," describing the fruit - in California. Dwarf manzanita (Fort Bragg), with its small leaves and red-brown bark, grows only in the pygmy forest; there is a specimen of the larger hairy manzanita on your left about twenty feet off the trail.
