Here and across the cove you can see the soil layers exposed at the cliff's edge. On top is a dark layer of grassland soil one to three feet deep; beneath it, resting on a bedrock of graywacke1 sandstone, is a brownish colored layer of old beach materials six to twenty feet thick.
1 graywacke (wak´): a nonporous, dark-colored sandstone containing angular grains and fragments of other rocks.
