Jug Handle Trail: Location 8

As you emerge from the creek canyon back onto the first terrace, the trees around you are the two-needle bishop pine and the three needle Monterey pine. The Bishop pine is native to this area; thousands of seedlings of Monterey pine, native to central California, were planted here before this area became a state reserve to make it more attractive as a housing development. These pines are accelerating the change of the first terrace's grassland to a forest.
