Mailliard Redwoods State Reserve
Vegetation cover consists primarily of a transitional mixed evergreen (Redwood) forest with a scattering of deciduous oak. It supports a variety of wildlife including Blacktail deer, feral pig, and bobcat as well as many smaller animals. Access into the reserve is difficult due to the steepness of the terrain and is limited primarily to roadside stops.
Although the area has apparently not been logged, the Redwoods are young growth. It is a good example of a young, uncut Redwood forest in the first stage of transition.
The area surrounding the reserve is owned by the Mailliard family. The reserve was named for conservationist John Ward Mailliard Jr., who before his death in 1954 was an active member of the Save-the-Redwood League.
